This coming weekend Mason High School will once again host the Greater Miami Conference swimming and diving championships, in which both the girls and boys teams hope to win conference titles.

According to head coach Mark Sullivan, big things are expected out of his teams.

“We’re expecting our times to be fast because this is GMC’s, which has a lot of significance to us,” Sullivan said. “We’re going up against a lot of good teams that are on a highly competitive level. Even though (our swimmers) won’t be fully rested, we’re expecting to swim well.”

The girls have been conference champions since Mason entered the GMC in 2007. Sullivan said he thinks they are favored to win it again. The boys team, however, has lost to Sycamore the past three years.

“Sycamore has pretty much been dominating the league so they’re going to be the favorite again,” Sullivan said. “But I definitely think the boys have what it takes to win the conference. Obviously, Sycamore doesn’t want to lose it so we are going to have to prepare ourselves very well.”

According to Sullivan, the Comets will have to rely on their depth if they want to dethrone the Aviators.

“Sycamore has a few top-tier swimmers that will probably win or finish in the top three, but I don’t know if they’re as deep as we are,” Sullivan said. “A lot of it depends on the lineup and we’ll have to win with our depth.”
