West girls 12th at Classic

By Mark Schmetzer

None of Lakota West’s relay teams teams finished among the top eight in last weekend’s Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Classic, but coach Dennis Beck still was impressed with their performances.

“I thought the performance of the boys and girls relay teams was quite impressive,” he said Wednesday morning. “I think we have a really good shot at getting them all through all the way to state. It was good to see them swim better at night (in the consolation finals) than in the morning (preliminaries).

The girls finished 12th out of 39 teams and the boys 15th out of 41 at the 30th annual event, which included preliminary swimming and diving competition at nine different sites. Swimming finals were Saturday and Sunday nights at Keating Natatorium on the St. Xavier High School campus. Diving finals were contested Sunday morning and early afternoon at the Keating Aquatics Center at the University of Cincinnati.

Junior Casey Frazier led the way for Lakota West, reaching the eight-swimmer finals in four events. Frazier finished sixth in the 400-yard individual medley, seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in the 200 beaststroke and 100 breaststroke.

“Casey always steps up and swims pretty fast in big meets,” Beck said. “I think you’re going to see her continue to do that.”

The Firebirds also got impressive performances from senior Bryan McNamara, who finished third in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free, and senior Darla House, who finished 10th in the 25-diver finals of the 1-meter competition.

Lakota East is scheduled to swim in tri-meets Friday at Mason and Tuesday at Sycamore before competing in the Greater Miami Conference championship meet on Feb. 2 at Mason. The Firebirds are scheduled to open Division I sectional competition with boys diving on Feb. 5 and girls diving on Feb. 6, both at Miami, followed by boys swimming on February 8 and girls swimming on Feb. 9, both at Keating Natatorium.
