Lakota East peaking at right time

By John Cummings

CENTERVILLE —

Headed into the Centerville 2 Division I sectional tournament, Lakota East returning state qualifier Austin Daly had a good feeling.

“I knew we had a shot (at winning it),” Daly said after claiming the 120 title with a win over Middletown’s Cody Back. “Our coach knows how to make us peak at the right time of the year.”

The fact that East advanced nine and won was weird for Daly after advancing 13 two years ago and not claiming the title.

“This feels good,” Daly said. “This time of the season is a lot more mental. You put in the work, now you just have to keep your mind straight.”

Jacob Burton claimed the other title for East, winning 8-4 at 285.

Middletown took five wrestlers into the sectional tournament and will take all five to the district meet.

“It’s crazy,” Middletown 152 LaTrell Davis after a 9-1 win in the finals. “It shows how tough our room is with just six people.”

Davis, who missed most of the last two weeks of practice while rehabbing an ankle injury from the Greater Miami Conference finals, was glad to put his body to the test.

“It is hard knowing my past (with injuries),” Davis said after being one of four to advance to the finals. “I had doubts and negative thoughts, so this was a bigger win just getting past the mental block.”

Jacob Globke (160) claimed the title while Anthony Jagel (106) and Back were second.

Fairfield rallied from 20 points down in the finals to claim its 15th sectional title with 212 points. Elder, which led the entire way, was second with 202.

Fairfield went 10-1 overall in the final round, getting championships from Greysun Barden (120), Taylor Bryant (132), Adam Sams (138), Dylan Lauffer (152), and Stephan Ludwig (195).

For Sams, it made him a perfect 4-for-4 in sectional titles.

“We didn’t wrestle our best early on, but our kids battled back,” Fairfield assistant coach Jason Laflin said.

Hamilton advanced five, getting second-place finishes from Nicc Wells (113), Daniel Rameriz (126) and Robbie Parker (285).

Ross rolls to title: Ross placed 12 wrestlers in the championship finals and advanced 13 to the Division II district tournament in putting 293 points on the board at the Western Brown sectional.

New Richmond was second by 108 points.

Ross got titles from Cordell Byrd (138), Joseph Jones (145), Andrew Dunn (152), Dalton Jones (160), Tyler Bridwell (195) and Frank Heimkreiter (220) with Aaron Ross (106), Brendan Williams (113), Joey Yerace (120), Austin Russell (126), Ben Davis (182) and Gavin Peacock (285) all finishing second.

Franklin claims Tipp City title: It had been eight years since the Franklin wrestling team claimed a sectional championship — until Saturday night.

Franklin got five championships in scoring 221.5 points to overwhelm second-place Carroll by 63.5 points. Chase Henderson had the big win for the Wildcats. The senior 285 pounder handed undefeated Beau Harmon of Ben Logan 3-1 in overtime for the title.

Carlisle second: Carlisle finished tied for second with Dixie at the Carlisle Division III sectional with 184.5 points. The Indians got titles from Jason Sandlin (132), Jimmy Sandlin (160), Nick Svarda (170), Marcus Smith (195) and Darren Milligan (220).
