Xenia man indicted on vehicular homicide charges

By Denise G. Callahan

LEBANON —

A Xenia man who allegedly killed a woman in an October crash in Springboro has been indicted on vehicular homicide charges.

A Warren County grand jury indicted Jason Shope, 42, on a single count of fourth degree felony vehicular homicide on Friday. Prosecutor David Fornshell said Shope was driving recklessly at around 8 p.m. Oct. 23 when he struck two cars and the passenger in his car, Michelle Filson, a 42-year-old Xenia woman, was killed.

“He was going around traffic and hit the curb in front of the Speedway on the southwest corner of (Ohio) 741 and (Ohio) 73,” he said. “Once he hit the curb, he lost control of the vehicle and struck two other vehicles and the backseat passenger in one was killed in the crash.”

Fornshell said Shope was driving negligently under a license suspension so the vehicular homicide charge was warranted. Fornshell said Shope was “weaving in and out” of other vehicles at around 55 mph, in the area where the speed limit is 25.

Fornshell said Shope has had several driver’s license issues including, but not limited to, one for unpaid child support, a Bureau of Motor Vehicles administrative suspension and a license cancellation.

If Shope is found guilty, he faces a possible 18-month prison term.
