LEBANON BUSINESS

Former grocery to become Peddler’s Mall

By Denise G. Callahan

LEBANON —

The former Big Bear grocery store in Lebanon is no longer in hibernation — a new “Peddler’s Mall” will open soon at that location.

John George says his emporium is a bit like an indoor yard sale — but not a flea market — where people can take their items and sell them, without having to actually sit there and hawk their wares and count change.

“They go in and present the booth, decorate it up. They have a control tag, it’s all done by computers, we send them an email every night of what they’ve sold and pay them at the end of the month, minus the rent,” he said. “And we have just about anything that was ever made in life.”

Booth space is $120 per month for an 8-by-10 foot space and there is room in the renovated space for 350 booths. George said this will be his 18th store and the first in Ohio. He plans to open the store on Columbus Avenue sometime between mid-March and the first of April.

George said they will have a mix of items for sale, including antiques, furniture and tableware.

Lebanon Economic Development Director Jason Millard said the owner of the former Big Bear building has invested $350,000 renovating the space to create two 45,000 square-foot spaces. Peddler’s Mall is spending $125,000 to renovate its space, he said.

The Big Bear closed in 2004, and Millard said he is not sure what might be going in on the other side of the newly renovated store.

George said the mall will be open seven days a week and will be opening more stores in Ohio soon.
