DP&L: Only 40 customers without power from Thursday ice storms

Along with DP&L working to restore power for those customers, Duke Energy is also continuing power restoration work in Ohio and Kentucky, according to a release.

About 1,600 Ohio Duke Energy customers remain without power after nearly 230,000 experienced power outages because of Thursday’s ice storm.

Electricity for Duke Energy will be restored to all customers by noon Sunday, though most should be back on before then, read the release.

UPDATE Nov. 17 @ 9:04 a.m.: 

Just under 1,900 customers remain without power from Thursday’s ice storms, initially affecting 78,000 DP&L customers.

More than 100 crews from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Virginia are working to get the remaining customers up and running as soon as possible, spokesperson Mary Ann Kabel said.

According to a message posted on the company’s outage map, estimated restoration times will be available as each outage is assessed and crews are assigned.

UPDATE Nov. 16 @ 3:30 p.m.:

An ice storm that left thousands without power is a “top five” outage event for DP&L, according to the company.

As of 3 p.m. today, crews had replaced 70 poles and more than 1,000 lines.

A combination of ice and leaves weighing down tree branches made the outages worse, according to the company.

Most outages are just one or two houses, making it an even more time-consuming process.

UPDATE Nov. 16 @ 2:32 p.m.:

As of Friday afternoon, the DP&L had restored service to all but about 6,300 of its customers, according to the utility company.

Company spokesperson Mary Ann Kabel said DP&L has restored service to its larger lines and crews were focusing on residential outages. The goal, she said, was service restoration to 95 percent of customers by Friday night.

“We appreciate everybody’s patience,” Kabel said. “We’re working. We’re getting there as quickly as possible – getting things up as safely as possible.”

DP&L considers safety, downed power lines and restoration “all as number 1 priorities,” she said. “I wouldn’t rank those in order. Those all come together at the same time.”

Duke Energy plans to have power restored to customers by noon Sunday, but most people will have service back before than, according to the company.

As of 8 a.m. today, 187,000 customers in Southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky had service restored.

About 19,000 are still without power.

“We have deployed every available resource to respond to this storm and brought in 400 additional personnel from our companies in the Carolinas to help with power restoration,” said Storm Director Kevin Morgan. “The type of damage that ice does on our system creates unique challenges and is different than anything else.”

An estimated 78,000 customers were affected by outages caused by Thursday morning's ice storm that brought down tree limbs and power lines, DP&L officials said in their latest update on restoration efforts.

According to the company's online outage map, electric service for 80 percent of the customers affected has been restored, leaving approximately 13,500 still without power.

Still, because of the number of calls, DP&L officials said they expect restoration efforts to go into the weekend.

“With the amount of people we have out, this could potentially be a multi-day event going into the weekend,” Kabel said. “So preparedness is key.”

DP&L employees are working to restore power and mutual aid crews are being called in from Indiana and Virginia.

“At this time, we are not able to provide estimated restoration times for individual customers,” Kabel said. “We are still assessing damage as many incidents are isolated, impacting only one or two customers.”

Kabel said DP&L understands it’s frustrating to lose power for extended periods. We thank our customers for patience as we work as quickly and safely as possible.”
