The Newbees return to Fitton Center for 2 nights of Woodstock-themed shows

‘Flower Power’ show will feature music from Woodstock

After a sold-out show in 2017, The Newbees will return to the Fitton Center for two nights of music on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, as they celebrate the music of Woodstock’s greatest songs and performers with a “Flower Power” show.

“This is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock and The Newbees are bringing their ‘Flower Power’ show to the Fitton Center. The Newbees, obviously, are powerhouses of local entertainment. They are an incredible band with wonderful musicians,” said Ian MacKenzie-Thurley, executive director of the Fitton Center.

The Newbees “Flower Power” show will feature music from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Canned Heat, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jefferson Airplane and Joe Crocker, among others.

“Flower Power is a tribute to Woodstock, which has been an American icon for 50 years, and people talk about the 1969 era when they talk about Woodstock. It’s one of the great benchmarks in rock history, and I couldn’t think of a better band to come and represent that. The Newbees will be performing two nights here, so get your tickets quickly, because the seats will fill up. We were turning people away last time. It’s a lot of fun, and it will be a great night of music for audiences of all ages,” said MacKenzie-Thurley.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. The original Woodstock Music and Art Festival was held in August of 1969 on a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y. Over the course of three days (Aug. 15-17), nearly a half a million people gathered on the 600-acre farm to hear 32 acts, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, and many more.

“This is a tribute show, but nobody pretends to be the band (like Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin.) It’s about the music, the feel and the vibe, and they put on a great show with wonderful energy. You can feel the energy when they are at the Fitton Center. They love coming here. They love coming to Hamilton, and they really enjoy the audience here. It’s one of the highlights of their musical year,” he said.

MacKenzie-Thurley said there’s a segment of The Newbees show called “Should-of-Stock,” instead of Woodstock, which features music from some of the bands that didn’t make the Woodstock lineup, who they feel should have been there.

The Newbees, a Cincinnati-based rock band founded by husband and wife duo, Jeff and Misty Perholtz, have been performing across the region and beyond for more than a decade. Comprised of original compositions crafted in harmony and improvisation, the band performs an array of songs that are rooted in vintage pop and rock.
