WEST CHESTER TWP. —

Don’t worry about reading a bad book in this West Chester Twp. book club - they’re all classics.

“Usually everyone likes the books we read here,” said Mark Crisanti, one of the members. “That’s not always the case at other clubs.”

According to the dozen members of the Classic Literature Book Club, held at the Midpointe Library System of West Chester Twp., the genre eliminates poorly reviewed novels.

When was it formed? The club started three years ago at the Barnes & Noble of the Streets of West Chester Twp. Low membership prompted the bookstore to forfeit the club to the neighboring library.

What book did you read in January? “Mansfield Park” by Jane Austen

What’s it about? The juxtaposition of poor, moral Fanny Price and wealthy, superficial Mary Crawford captures English aristocracy and the downside to marrying for wealth.

How did you like it? Crisanti found the novel more pragmatic than other Austen work, but enjoyed her 1815 novel “Emma” better.

Member Anne Hemmings of Liberty Twp. found the heroines more interesting in “Mansfield Park,” compared to other Austen books, especially a scandalous hint about Price’s proprietary at the end. Founding member Lucian Wilson said age made him appreciate the famous female writer.

“When I was a young man, you wouldn’t catch me near a Jane Austen book,” said Wilson. “But I’m glad I read it, I’m surprised by how deep she is.”

How did you chose this book? Every four months, members submit book proposals. The library emails the list to the members for vote and the most popular make the list. There’s only one rule - the book has to be at least 50 years old. Books range from 1962’s “A Clockwork Orange” to 19th century Charles Dickens’s novels.

Why would you suggest someone to join this book club? “It gives you a chance to read the classics you’ve never had a chance to read,” said Stacy Abbott of Loveland.

When and where are club meetings? Every fourth Wednesday, the group meets in the conference room in the back left corner of the Midpointe Library System of West Chester Twp. (9363 Centre Point, West Chester Twp.).

How do you join? Attend meetings, where you can join the group’s email list to stay up-to-date on future meetings and books. Members are responsible for obtaining their own books, but can search through Ohio library catalogs and e-book collections on the library’s website at www.midpointelibrary.org.
