Book club has home at Lebanon library

By Hayley Day

LEBANON —

Before it began meeting at the Lebanon Public Library, this 10-year old book club called several Lebanon book stores home. Now, Linda Hilgeman of Lebanon facilitates the 30-person club, which meets monthly.

What book are you reading in January? Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow

What’s it about? It’s about George Washington. It tells everything about him, from his childhood, the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and his presidency. A lot of it was taken from his personal diaries.

Why did you choose this one? All 30 members submit one or two titles they’d like to read and we vote each summer. The books with the most votes make the list. We read a lot of history books, and sometimes we get bogged down and say “O.K., let’s just read a book for fun, now.”

How do you like it so far? I really like it. You learn so much about our founding fathers and the Revolutionary War. Like, when our troops set out for Valley Forge, most people don’t know, but they had to walk miles in the winter, without shoes and warm clothes. It’s a miracle we came out the winners!

How did you get involved with this book club? Before it was at the library, it was held at Dicken’s Book Shop in Lebanon, by the Village Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant. Then, when that went out of business, we moved it to a new bookstore. When that closed after a year, we moved it to the library. It’s probably been around for 10 years, but I’ve had it for seven.

Why would you suggest someone to come to the book club? If you like to read and talk about books, this is the place for you. We let everyone talk freely and express their ideas.

When and where are club meetings held? Meetings are 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., the last Thursday of every month at the Lebanon Public Library, 101 South Broadway St., Lebanon.

How do you join? Just come to meetings and you can be added to the email list to stay in contact. For those without a computer, I call. I get the books, too, from different local libraries, like Lebanon’s, because no one ever wants to buy.
