Ex-nursing home worker allegedly had 3 elderly victims 18 years ago

Investigators and prosecutors haven’t said what led them to rape charges against a former Dayton nursing home worker accused this month of raping a non-verbal, bed-ridden Mason nursing home patient more than 18 years ago.

However, new court documents obtained by the Dayton Daily News allege the accused man told his girlfriend he committed the same crimes against two other women during the same time period.

The allegations are in a search warrant investigators obtained in Warren County Common Pleas Court to seek evidence in the case against Michael W. Schneider.

Schneider, 55, of Union Twp., Clermont County, remained in the Warren County Jail on Monday, charged with two counts of rape involving one patient at the Cedar Village Retirement Community in Mason in July 2000.

According to an affidavit filed with the search warrant, Schneider was arrested on Feb. 27 after Mason police investigated “a tip from the FBI about a confession of a health-care worker who admitted to sexually assaulting three women at a facility in Mason about 20 years ago.”

The woman, described as Schneider’s girlfriend, told a Mason detective “Schneider recently confided in her that while he was a nurse’s aide at Cedar Village about 20 years ago, he sexually assaulted three, separate, elderly women,” Detective Levi Wells said in the affidavit.

Wells said he located two police reports “from that time frame outlining abuse of patients directly under Schneider’s care, one of which had the same condition Schneider had disclosed” to his girlfriend.

“At the time of the complaint, the abuse was only believed to be physical and could not be corroborated,” Wells added in the affidavit.

In the affidavit, Wells said he also obtained a recording of Schneider admitting to the sex crimes.

“On the recording, he also admits to wanting to have sex with children,” Wells said in the affidavit.

Wells and Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell have declined to say what evidence prompted the arrest and indictment of Schneider, who had been working at Riverside Healthcare in Harrison Twp., Montgomery County. He was scheduled to work there the night of his arrest.

On Monday, Fornshell indicated anyone with information about Schneider should contact their local police department. He declined further comment on the case.

Who’s In Warren County Jail

Schneider remained in the jail in Lebanon in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Schneider’s registered nursing license was listed as inactive as of Oct. 27, 2017, according to online state records. Issued in 2002, the license was to expire on Oct. 31.

The Ohio Nursing Board did not immediately respond to requests for information.

Last week, the current and past operators of Cedar Village indicated they were cooperating with authorities.

Schneider had worked about three weeks at Riverside Healthcare when he was arrested, according to Fred Stratmann, the general counsel with Communicare, which owns the facility.

Assessments of patients and investigation found no cases of abuse, according to Stratmann.

“We’re confident that none of our residents were harmed in any way,” Stratmann said Monday. No referral was made to police.

“There wouldn’t have been any reason to report any of that to the police,” Stratmann said.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr.’s spokesman, Greg Flannagan, said their office was unfamiliar with the case.

A pretrial hearing and scheduling conference is scheduled on April 3 in Warren County Common Pleas Court.
